CASE STUDY 6 Ahead of Schedule
After hiring a consultant to conduct a thorough vendor study, the publisher of a
premier bimonthly scientific journal decided to award the copyediting and production
of the journal to PreMediaGlobal’s journals division (formerly BeaconPMG). Two years
into production (2010), the publisher is very pleased that we have been able to
consistently produce the journal ahead of schedule, something that they had not been
able to see other vendors achieve. Our highly engineered and customized process
ensured rapid throughput, with no backlogs or bottlenecks. Further, due to the qual-
ity of our copyediting and page layout, the managing editor was able to significantly
reduce the time she had originally allotted for publisher review and for the corrections
phase. This shortening of the production cycle meant that the online version could be
published 2 weeks ahead of the dates stipulated in the original plan. The managing
editor referred to the dates achieved for both online and print publication as “a great
feat.” The publisher was emphatic about renewing our contract, choosing not to solicit
bids from other vendors.
